Yachiyo Ekimae

Yachiyo Ekimae is a historic eatery in Hikone, boasting over a century of tradition. Located conveniently just outside JR Hikone Station’s west exit, it’s a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.

The most popular dish is Hikone-don, created in 2007 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Hikone Castle. This special bowl features Omi rice topped generously with slow-simmered wagyu beef tendon and colorful konjac. The base flavor comes from rich dashi broth made from Rishiri kombu seaweed and bonito flakes—commonly used in soba and udon dishes. While seasoned similarly to sukiyaki, the taste remains surprisingly light, and mixing in the accompanying soft-boiled egg creates an even milder, smoother taste.

Offering a wide variety of noodles, rice bowls, and set meals, Yachiyo Ekimae caters to all tastes, day or night. Many dishes feature premium Omi beef, including beef rice bowls, meat udon, and more. In the evenings, relax with local Shiga sake paired with regional specialties such as funa-zushi (fermented carp sushi), sliced red konjac, and sweet-cooked small ayu fish.
