Located near Kyoto’s renowned Heian Jingu Shrine, this charming guesthouse occupies a beautifully renovated Kyoto townhouse (Kyo-machiya) built over 100 years ago. When first opened in 2006, WARAKU-AN was among the pioneers in transforming traditional Kyoto townhouses into premiere guest stays.

The thoughtful restoration was carried out by the French owner—also a skilled carpenter—and the innkeeper. Make your way in through the traditional entrance to find sliding doors featuring paintings of rugosa roses and a cozy lounge furnished with antique furniture. The peaceful atmosphere here sets it apart from Kyoto’s bustling city streets. The traditional Japanese courtyard garden often attracts small birds, adding to the tranquil ambiance.

Rooms include a Deluxe Room with a veranda overlooking the garden, Twin Rooms accommodating up to three guests, Double Rooms ideal for couples, and Single Rooms perfect for solo travelers. Guests can enhance their stay by renting yukata robes (for a fee) to fully immerse in the traditional Japanese atmosphere. Complimentary amenities like hairdryers, curling irons, and electric kettles are also available upon request.

For additional accommodation options, the sister property Guest House TSUKITO is located just two doors away.
